FAMU DRS Students Attend FAMU SAET "Black Architects in the Making" Event
On Thursday, February 20, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University's (FAMU) School of Architecture and Engineering Technology (SAET) hosted a "Black Architects in the Making" event for FAMU Developmental Research School (DRS) students.
Thirty middle and high school students participated in the workshop, presented by Miami architects, Craig Aquart, AIA, Naomi Harrison, AIA, and the Miami Center of Architecture and Design, which focused on introducing middle and high school students to architecture.
'This event exposed our students to a field they may not have initially considered," said FAMU DRS Superintendent Micheal Johnson. “The workshops provided career-based, exploratory learning experiences that will benefit students as they begin to set career goals.
The Black Architects in the Making event included creative games, presentations and hands-on computer-based model construction to entice and encourage students to consider architecture as a career choice.
“Students who knew little or nothing about architecture and the role it plays in their communities now understand their involvement in building better communities is essential to their well-being," said Aquart.
Although Black Architects in the Making primarily focuses on introducing African American students to architecture, organizers emphasize students—regardless of ethnicity—are welcome and encouraged to participate.
